Wagons are no more or less reliable than the sedans, so any advice here on a particular year is still good, so I won't rehash it. Just browse around or search.
Do be aware of what you're buying though:
Aeros get you the most HP in a given year, though towards the end, there was only one motor.
1999-2001: if it has an auto trans, it is a 4 speed trans; halogen headlamps (with glass lenses) only; 'SE' models should all have the V6 with auto trans, though some 1999s may have a 4 cylinder and auto trans.
2001-2005: first "facelift": grille integral with bumper; Auto trans is now a 5 speed; Auto trans gets "thumb" shifters on steering wheel in 2003; Xenon headlmps (option) or Halogen with plastic lenses that can cloud; first appearance of "Arc" and "Linear" models. "Linear" models had low-output 4 cylinder most years, "Arc" had the V6 ("3.0t") for 2002 & 2003, changed to 230 HP 4 cylinder ("2.3T") for 2004; Aero & Arc got larger front brakes and ventilated rear brakes.
2005-2009: Second "Facelift": Dash re-design with "GM Standard" radio and AirCon controls. Eventually, there was one motor across all versions, a 260 HP 4 cylinder turbo.
On the 4 cylinder, up to 2003, the valve cover is black, 2004- it is left natural aluminum (makes it look a little like the motor in the 9-3 SS, which is totally different). Early 4 cylinders could have sludge problems, but if caught early, or if the recommended oil and service intervals were followed may not be an issue. There was a "fix" to the PCV system from 2004 that can be fitted to earlier models.
The V6: 200 hp, and lots of torque, is a good motor. Very smooth and quiet. It is, however, intolerant of poor maintenance. Oil must be changed regularly, and the timing belt (and other bits) MUST be changed at 60k mile intervals. A broken belt means a broken engine.
