Tools for doing own maintenance.

Hey all,
I got a copy of WIS and decided that doing most of the routine maintenance on my car is within my capabilities. Unfortunately, I've never actually done any work on any car in my life. Does anyone have a list of suggested tools to cover most scenarios? Do I need metric sizes, US sizes, or both? I'm starting with the cabin filter (yeah, not very glamorous, but I need to get back there to disable the dead Analog OnStar with a Bluetooth hands free adapter and a SAAB AUX for plugging in my iPod).
Next I'll probably do an oil change, replace the serp belt, pulleys and tensioners. If that goes well, I'm looking to replace the stock suspension with some decent aftermarket stuff. I've got an '03 9-5 Arc wagon. If there's anyone around the Philadelphia are (PA, NJ, DE) who'd be willing to help me out in exchange for helping on his car or some IT work in trade, I'd be up for labor trade.
Thanks.
