Flipping is good, but... You should not ever run directional tread tires the wrong direction.
"Flipping" tires is de-mounting the tire from the wheel, then re-mounting it on the same wheel so the old outside sidewall is now the new inside sidewall, and then mounting it on the car so that the PROPER DIRECTION OF ROTATION IS MAINTAINED, e.g. the old right tires are flipped on the wheels, and become your new left tires, and v-v.
The only complication would be if you also had directional wheels...
The hardest part about getting your tires flipped is explaining it to the tire tech... I've done it a few times, and it works wonders on evening out wear.
Tread patterns come in several flavors:
Standard: these can rotate in either direction, no special markings. Can be moved anywhere.
Directional: These should only rotate in one direction. They will have an arrow with the word "ROTATION" on the sidewall. Must be "flipped" on the wheel to move to the other side of the car.
Asymmetrical: These must be mounted with one side to the inside, and the other to the outside, but can be rotated wither way. Usually marked "OUTSIDE" or something like that. Cannot be "flipped", but can be moved to either side of the car while still mounted.
Directional AND Asymmetrical: These must be mounted so they a) rotate the proper way AND b) have the proper side facing out. You have to buy 2 right tires and 2 left tires. No flipping, and no moving to the other side. I had a set of Nokian summer tires that were like this...
