may be the final frontier, but there isn't enough of it under the 9-5s hood for an "ordinary" brake booster. In its place is a "dual diaphragm" model, with two smaller vacuum diaphragms in series, and naturally an air space in between. I suspect the added complexity, along with the atmospheric pressure region right in the middle, leads to the relative short life expectancy.
FWIW, my 2002, with 118K, isn't hissing yet but loses vacuum in a relatively short time. Then it started whistling sometimes when I let off the brakes. I "shotgunned" the problem with a new vacuum line set, and found that the whistling came from the check valves. Suck on either vacuum end and it would "honk" and then block further flow. Blow on either vacuum end and it was totally blocked, as it should. It doesn't whistle any longer, but it still loses vacuum. My independent tech advised waiting until it actually makes a hissing noise before replacing the booster. Given the long list of stuff that has to be moved out of the way, I tend to agree with that...
