If you are used to doing well with FWD and run snow tires like you also do in your area AWD might not add a whole lot to your driving experience to justify the additional cost you outlined.
Where I live (CO) it's dry most of the time and I just picked up an AWD CUV and it works well in the snow plus the handling is enhanced with the use of electronic torque vectoring which is becoming pretty common place these days.
Now for my daughters Hyundai Elantra I bought a snow tire wheel package but it did cost $750 and a bit of a bother changing out twice a year but provides good traction in the snow. I've had snow tires on my Saabs years back - but in Colorado if you drive a lot and winter temps are often in the 50s - going thru snow tires every 3 or 4 yrs also is another cost and the handling is definately impacted with snows in warmer temps - can be mushy at times depending on your snow tires.
