So installed a new booster, and no more idle speed surging. Brake pedal has virtually no effect to manifold vacuum with the gear in P. Power assist is there even with quickly pressing the pedal, and even after shutting off the engine for 2 strokes, definitely holding vacuum as it should. Will observe if any fault codes come back, hope not...
Some notes from the job.
Even though I measured the coupling rod with a digital caliper and reinstalled it to the new booster, still alignment was a bit off (too short) so that my brake light was on when reconnected the battery... Fortunately though it was close enough that some light tapping on the switch bracket did the trick getting switches in alignment.
I removed wiper arms and went a method to take the booster/ bracket assy. off. I could reach to 2 bracket bottom bolts from top. Tight to get it out and in but master cylinder could moved up just enough to let it pass. The clip holding the brake and booster rods together jumped off, even though I wired it up with fear to lose this hen's teeth part, but luckily I heard it hitting the floor and managed to find it. I took the opportunity to replace thermostat and temp. sensor while easily accessible. Already replaced the coolant bypass valve last summer, it was dry so so just kissed it for good luck.
Bernie and saabmedic, thanks for help in diagnosing the issue. Also past postings here we're very helpful to tackle on the job... made it much easier than anticipated.
