Most other brands of car, when the iihs SUV side impact tests came out, failed miserably. Their solution was side curtain airbags. Saab's solution (they basically invented the iihs SUV side impact test and iihs adopted it) was the folding B pillar. Folding B pillar always works even if the car is off or whatever. All those other cars that rely 100% on the curtains are less safe imho. Have they bothered to change the structural design to address this in the last 10 years? Or do they still only rely on the curtains? I'm willing to bet a donut (in this bean counter driven world) that the latter is true. So 10 years out, those cars may or may not be very safe in that sort of collision.
With the c900, it says in the manual to get the airbag electronics tested at the dealer - our dealer had no idea what they were supposed to do! Probably as others pointed out, fault codes in the system are triggered if sensors and wiring fail to pass a start up test. So that is probably taken care of in the 9-5 and most newer cars. Even so, reports of collisions of c900's show that airbags usually are deploying still! That said, if it doesn't deploy in a c900, the entire interior is padded and designed to reduce injury during a collision. They almost did not need airbags. Many people forget that, with the hard plastic interiors of today. Those old saabs were designed very well for what was available at the time (even considerations for whiplash, though not as good as SAHRs).
