I had my pass door airbag sensor go bad in my 00 9-3 a few years back, it threw a code that had to be read by the dealer. We could not find a new one to replace it with and after a few months I had to get a used one from GoldWing. The dealer installed it and the code went away. So it is clear if the wiring connection is lost or the sensor goes bad it will throw a code and trigger the dash waring light. What cannot be detected is a compromise to the "pressure chamber" itself.
I had the membranes off in that car to replace my front door speakers and installed dynamat to the inside of the door exterior metal panel, this reduced NVH and quieted the ride, but I never even thought about preservation of this membrane, though I put it back and sealed things carefully. Do not think addition of the dynamat did anything that would impact that...but.
Fortunately, the car was never in an accident in the 11 years I had it.
