That little brass nipple and hose plays a big role on the V6 since when I measure the crank case vacuum with my gauge, it might read + 0.10 kPa at idle with it plugged and -0.70 kPa with it open.
That vacuum alone makes the engine suck the oil inwards at least most of the time and a functioning check valve stops the turbo boost from pressurizing the crank case even more during acceleration.
The Saab PCV hoopla was only the tip of the iceberg and unlucky for Saab, they were among the first to get caught in it.
Now, many other brands have the same problem and like in Volvo's case, creates a slew of different problems including rough running and hooting noises to large oil consumption.
