Alternator, how to be sure?

While driving I got ABS warning lights. I pulled over to try to restart and see if the lights would clear. The car wouldn't start and had to be towed. The battery tested ok, but with a charged battery I get ~12.04V. I'd have to check the service records from before I had the car, but it may be the original alternator at ~205K. Could the cable suddenly fail? Anything else? I'm trying to avoid swapping the alternator if it's not the problem.
I'm debating DIYing this. The horror stories abound, but then the rear engine mount was said to be impossible and wasn't bad.
