In the attached post there is a link to a procedure on how to do a voltage drop test on the cables. That's the best way to test whether the cable's load carrying capacity is compromised.
Corroded cable has a knock-on effect -- it can stress and heat up the alternator as it fights to get current up to the battery and, and it can cause the battery to not charge efficiently, especially in short run times (like short trips to do errands). This can result in long slower cranks with no start condition.
It is a known point of failure and well worth checking out. I cannot get over the difference it made in my car when I finally did it a few years ago.
