they advised not to use steel wheels iirc due to risk of bolt breakage due to corrosion...
I gave up using steel wheels for winter years ago. Used alloys are so plentiful, I always just get a set of those for my winter tires. Heck, I recently bought an extra pair of 9-5 16" alloys that I didn't need because they were so cheap ($20 for the pair) and matched a set I had... may come in handy if I ever bend a rim!
|My first SAAB I bought new steel wheels... what a joke!! I could have bought a set of used alloys for the price of 1 steel wheel for a c900!
Always use a torque wrench when tightening your wheel bolts...
Might not be a bad idea to replace them periodically anyway... they are pretty cheap...
I know it is bad, but I always put a *very* thin smear of grease over the threads of the bolts just to guard against corrosion. It is dangerous as it makes it easy to overtighten a bolt, but I have never ever had an issue with bolts I installed myself and in our climate, any protection vs rust is valuable. Mine always come off with the right amount of effort and never are loose or overtight (unless someone else manhandles them)... we did have a major issue once where someone else slathered wheel bolts in anti-sieze (!!) and overtightened them... don't do that!
