I used thread inserts(helicoil) to repair the stripped holes in the alternator bracket-the two mounting bolts by the firewall. Pretty easy and stronger than original, most likely stronger than oversize too. Use the original bolts if the threads on the bolts are still good.
The inserts need the right size drill and tap and the tool to install the insert. I located the items at the local NAPA at five to nine one evening and was back on the road before 11 pm including new tensioner, idler and belt. I felt lucky not to have to remove the alternator and bracket and the rest of the mess! My bolts are 10 mm-I think the pitch is 1.5 but maybe 1.75.
