Many yrs back - 20 or more when Chrysler transmissions were routinely failing with under 100k miles, I recall reading an article where a chryler tranny was torn apart and compared with a disassembled Toyota box. The mechanics were astounded by the design but even more so by the quality of the parts used in the Toyota box.
There was a time when a lot of rear wheel drive cars with auto boxes didn't use the radiator to cool the ATF fluid, but hotter running engines and FWD designs need the ATF fluid to be pump circulated through a cooler and that pump moves atf thru the torque converter which typically generates the most heat in an auto box.
