Has anyone ever calibrated the fuel gauge using the Tech 2? (see WIS: 3. Electrical System:Main Instrument Unit:Adjustment:Replacement)
This past summer, I removed the fuel pump assembly in my '99 in order to clean the sender contacts and check for resistance linearity through the range of float travel, and to eliminate that annoying intermittent fuel gauge drop-to-zero signature despite a nearly full-tank (well documented by others on this board). The problem disappeared for at least three full tank refueling cycles over several months (but sadly reappeared).
The measured sensor resistance for the tank empty / float in bottom position varied between 56 and 51 ohms (spec: 50 ± 1.5 ohms) - it was sensitive to mechanical jiggling. A higher than spec resistance means that the amount of reserve fuel remaining is overstated - not a good thing.
With the original fuel pump assembly, the SID would reliability indicate a DTE of less than 5 miles. With the current fuel pump assembly (replaced 9 yrs , 77K miles ago), the tank can run dry even with a DTE of 45 miles.
