When to move on to a less used 9-5?

Both 9-5s are aging and the costs are rising, particularly as there less we can DIY at the moment and mechanics, Saab included, keep not optimally fixing things. The 01 lpt isn't driveable right now (radiator + plenty else needed). Everything is probably fixable but to put several thousand into a 17-18 year old car with ~215K might not make sense, especially when more might go down the line. On the other hand, another 9-5 might just be different problems as it won't have all the reconditioning done to this one. And sourcing a 9-5 in good condition is becoming more difficult and costly.
What factors do you all consider in deciding when to junk and move on versus keep investing? I'm not sure either car is too salable. Adding cars might be an option, but insurance isn't cheap in our area. It's not currently an optimal time to select a much newer car. It would be nice to have better reliability for longer trips as renting as sometimes been required. I'm not sure another 9-5 solves that problem due to vehicle age and difficulty servicing in some places if it breaks down.
