Many muffler shops put in aftermarket cats. We have an '85 Porsche 944 and the OE cat is >$2,500. We were given two aftermarket options by a reputable muffler shop, $700 and $150. The car is a beater that runs well. We chose the latter.
When looking at any 9-5 with >150,000 miles check the sub-frame bushings and engine mounts. Chances are good it will need some or all of them replaced. To do them all will cost $1,200+ (unless you have the skills and tools to DIY) but will make a massive difference in the way the car feels and drives. You'll need special tooling if you decide to tackle the sub-frame mounts yourself. There's lots of documentation about mounts and bushings on this board.
