My 2001 lpt , with 285k miles, was burning about 1 qt every 1000 miles.... From what i've read.. the valve guides and stem seals are pretty rock solid on these cars.
I ended up dropping the oil pan, cleaning the pickup screen and replacing the 2 pickup tubes O-rings.. and then doing a piston soak using the GM top engine cleaner...I then began driving very aggressively on the highway for a week or two (the old italian tuneup)... My thinking being that the piston rings may have been coked up/frozen... It definitely helped.. as I'm now getting around 2k mikes before needing to add a quart.. sometimes more!...
Other than that.. I would think if not your rings being frozen (or worn).. then focus on the turbo.. and check the PCV valve..
