See the link. The opening post has a link to a great article on brakes. I find the writer's statements quite credible. I had bedded in EBC pads quite agressivley before I read this. Looks like I was on the right track. I am a bit shy about 'burning' in the brakes as much as suggested. So everything in moderation I guess.
The EBC pads on new rotors on my 95SET had weak braking effort, very scarey. When I got them cooking they started to grip like crazy, then the braking effort moderated to some extent after that to be a bit less strong, but much better than stock brakes. With the 9-5 Aero, new pads on 161 mile rotors, the initial braking effort was not so scarey. Perhaps just a measure of the better brakes in the 9-5 or a measure of the 95SET brakes being a marginal design. Once I got out on a quite country blacktop and started doing repeated accelerations and hard braking over and over again, the braking started to get much stronger. Note that I avoided a full stop with these hot brakes which avoids a material transfer from the pad to the rotor which !needs to be avoided!.
So two points, get the brakes working to capacity in a controlled setting of your design to avoid weak brakes in a traffic situation where an accident and injury could result. This effect with new rotors and new pads might be more pronouced. The second point is to get the pads hot under controlled conditions where a material transfer can occur which creates brake pulsing that can feel just like a warped rotor. Once the pads are seasoned, this is not so likely to occur. This second part probably does not apply to pads of an abrasive design. See the link to the link for more explanations.
A pad like the EBC pads have a mixture of components, some contribute enough abrasive action to keep the film on the rotor under control. Again see the article.
If rotors are ever machined to deal with warpage, a bedding in happens all over again, even with the seasoned and compacted pad surfaces. This happened to be after a idiot balance my wheels and tighened them with an impact wrench, the brakes pulsed real bad. After much griping, they turned the rotors and the brakes were weak until I did some hard runs. (I was not happy about having my 6 month rotors machined.)
