I've owned Audi 4000, 4000 Quattro, 5000, and 5000 turbo. When I bought my first Saab, it was a 1997 900 SE turbo used w/21k miles and 4 year 75kmile extended warranty for $18k. I looked at Audi A4 1.8t, A4 2.8 V6, A6, and Volvo S70 first (all used). Also drove Passat 1.8t. The Audis definitely have unique interior lighting, some love it, some hate it, and lots of gadgets. The 1.8t is a dog, the V6 was very livable, and the A6 was great, but a tad slower w/the same v6. The Audis are really nice cars, but I've always liked the look/image of Saabs and finally bought one. I think the 900 is/was a phenomenal value compared to the Audis, and much more sporty/aggressive. Even the A4s were, in my opinion, way overpriced for what you got. The Saab's not as quiet and serene, but I like it's harsher edge. Two years and 24k miles later, it's been perfect without a single slightest problem. Still got 2 years and 30k on the warranty.
On the other hand, I just bought a used 1999 9-5 and that reminds me a lot of the A6. It's a much more luxurious class than my 900, but, suprisingly, seems just as powerful with the 2.3 4cyl turbo. In my opinion, you get a hell of a lot of value for you money with these cars, but the cliche does seem to be kind of true...you either love em' or hate em'. My wife HATED them, but fell in love with the 900 after I finally convinced her to look at it and drive it. She's the one who said our next car MUST be a Saab and suggested the 9-5. If you buy new, watch out, they hold value like a sieve. To me, however, that's a great attribute because I never buy new cars.
There is a significant "gadget factor" with these cars, and the "cockpit" is, well, just that...more like an airplane than a car. The interior lights are nice blue-green, nothing special IMHO.
The VW is solid, practical, but boring IMO, and overpriced. Don't know anything about Bimmers, but everyone I know who's got em' love em'.
Hope this helps.
