3- 4Car Line Up, not AWD, is deciding factor to Saab US

3-4 Car Line Up Is the Economic Thinking
Given current sales and this is with the "successful" 9-3SS Saab still needs another product. That is all there is to it under the GM, and frankly, most typical current economic models. (This is in and of itself a debatable issue as to whether those models are correct, but anyway...) The question is what is available to fit that niche in as short of time given the money being lost on the investment. (And the idea that GM is once again the Detroit money bags has largely disappeared. There are no money bags outside of Toyota. And Toyota is not guaranteed anything beyond 2003.)
So, what is out there? Obviously GM and Saab USA understand that Saab and Subaru, for whatever reason, share a similar consumer basis. But GM and Saab USA also understand that many many Euro car drivers in the US and many many want-to-be Euro drivers (a la the recent success of the horrible VW) in the US would prefer a Euro car to a Subaru. Alas, the recent interest in Euro cars by the US Japanese car driving public makes the "IDEA" of a Saab Subaru car very very tantalizing right now to GM/Saab USA. And, well, it is a fascinating idea and a brilliant analysis with a potential payback and model which can be used ACROSS THE GM LINE for other products. Duh. Duh, duh duh. HOWEVER, I agree with so many of you who know a lot more about cars than I that the result may be less than marketable beyond the GA boardroom of SAAB USA unless they give the little rebadge bugger a proper dose of Saab. I think as a minimum they've got to add on a Saab interior, including key placement, as well as a light turbo. Then they may have a real product to the buying public (not to many on this Board), even though the "new" "real" product would be almost the exact same car as the Impreza. If this is done, you can bet the Subaru dealers and Fuji will be wringing some hands here in the US. But, the Japanese are not that stupid, (I work for them) and for now Fuji must realize they have more to gain from the GM money than GM/Saab USA has to gain from the CURRENT version of the fender rebadge.
