Gary,

Here are your current settings, which were the same as mine:

(1) low temp upper 50 degrees C
(2) horizontal low temp 83 degrees C
(3) horizontal high temp 115 degrees C
(4) high temp low 129 degrees C
(5) temp gauge horizontal offset 0 degrees C.

I got to play w/a Tech 2 at a tech session, and had the same settings on mine. I made the following changes to take out the dead band:

2) changed Low 83 to 90
3) changed High 115 to 90

Basically this eliminates the dead zone from 83-115 degrees. I left the arbitrary settings of where the gauge was leaving the cold zone and entering the hot zone alone, because I figured Saab should have a pretty good idea of where those points should be!

My take on the original settings (my unverified opinion!)
1) is when the gauge will read at top of the cold band - 50 degrees. If the engine is cooler than 50degrees, the gauge will start lower and work up till it hits 50 degrees.

Then the reading will continue into the normal band centering between 83-115 range, and not moving up to the hot band until:

4) is when the gauge will read at the bottom of the hot band - 129 degrees.

The problem, in my opinion, is that I "like" to know the engine is running cooler and hotter BEFORE it overheats. That is, I wanted to know if the engine is running warmer than usual before it is a catastrophic problem. When my idler pulley broke, and the car overheated, I got to watch the situation right from the start, and got shut down before causing worse problems (but feeling ok to drive to drive the extra 2 miles to a convenience store - I was in the middle of nowhere and it was 5degrees F, so I wanted to wait in a warm place! And an idler puller/serpentine belt failure is MUCH MORE of a pain than a flat tire in reply to whoever made that comparo)

I left the other settings alone, according to my notes, and the gauge has acted like any normal temp gauge since: When it is really cold out, the temp centers lower (and below horizontal). It was fairly cold (high 20's/low30's F) the night I made the changes, and had a long highway run home, and the gauge stayed lower MUCH longer than I would have expected, and I first thought I should have changed the center. The next day was much warmer and it was fine, so I'm glad I left the centering alone. When it is hot out, the temp centers a bit higher on the gauge, and faster.

The two biggest differences with the changes are: first, you WILL see a longer warmup period between the top of the cold band and the new "normal" centering, and second, when you are in heavier (slow moving)traffic or sitting idling, the gauge will definately move up higher, which is normal. But I don't get any irregular fluctuations after the changes. I have had no problem with the changes, and am very glad I did them.

As another unsolicited comment on Tech II changes: I played with the menu's, and also decided to change some settings to the night panel, which is a feature I sometimes use on long, late night trips. The night panel will keep things dark until a problem or gauge requires monitoring, and I just had a different opinion of where that was.

For example, I raised the level where the low gas reading will light the panel to 1/4 tank (or whatever the liters were) from the reserve, so that I will have that much more time to plan on gas - important to me as I'm often in the middle of nowhere in non business hours. Nothing like having to spend the night waiting for a gas station to open at 6AM!

I lowered the point at which the temp gauge reading would illuminate the gauge to somewhere under the high temp mark (based on the above settings), so that I might have an earlier head's up that the car was running warmer than usual, and for the same reason I changed the gauge readings with the tech II.

And I lowered the point at which the full speedometer is illuminated from the 85 mph (which is just temping to go up to just to show passengers how it works ;-) ) to 75 mph, which is 10 over most highways around here, and it gives me an additional visual cue that I'm over that "grace" window on my speed.

So far, I've the night panel lighting changes have had no impact as far as the temp, but it has been on for fuel, and uh, occasionally for the speedo.

Hope this helps!
