There are surface contaminents on the glass as well as the paint. Detailing clay removes them without scratching. I recommend a glass polish as a follow up to remove grime, oil, grease, rubber build up from the blades, etc. Do a final cleaning with an auto glass cleaner (Stoners Invisible Glass, Eagle One 20/20, not Windex!!) and a microfiber towel (no paper towels) and you should have a perfectly clean windshield.
