but I am not too sure about the 20MPG number with the V8.
For what you have to pay for an X-5 with all the toys, you may get the V8 Touareg and be done with it for a lot less.
VW/Audi cars aren't too hot on the reliability department, if you don't mind going a bit slower, the A6 Avant would do, the S6 is nice but it is more than $50K if new, you may also consider the Allroad but it is also slow in auto form.
I think you should consider putting on better winter tires on an Aero, stud the tires if studs can be used. Then send your wife and yourself to a high performance driving school, i.e. Aero Academy, and learn how to handle skids. You have plenty of money left over for other things. If your wife thinks AWD is safer, think again when a AWD car starts to skid on ice. See the thread on the General BB on the very same topic.
