Well, you know more than I do, and I have a Master's in EE. The problem with engineering schools is that they are mainly theory. You don't learn anything practical until you get to the field. So, getting out of school, most EEs would be clueless about ESR. For instance, resistors are rated for power (i.e., you can have a 1 watt resistor). In school, there was never any mention of this, and I erroneously thought that all resistors were the same (i.e., a 1,000 ohm resistor is the same as another 1,000 ohm resistor). It doesn't take long before you realize that they aren't!
It's the same with capacitors. They never really teach about electrolytic versus other styles. They just teach whether a circuit with a capacitor in it is bandpass, lowpass, high pass, etc.
