I'm looking at Consumer Reports online right now and the '04 Passat is rated a 'Top Pick':
"For the second year, the Accord and Passat share the top spot. The Accord ($21,000 to $23,000) is our pick among four-cylinder cars, the Passat ($30,000) among V6 models. Both provide an excellent balance of comfort, roominess, and handling. The Toyota Camry ($23,000 to $29,000) is another good choice" - CR
Consumer Reports DOES trash the VW Jetta, Golf, and New Bettle - in fact the find themselves in the category of Repeat Offenders: "much-worse-than-average overall reliability". I believe this might have to do with the fact that the Jetta/Golf/NB are built in Mexico (at least the ones sold in the US are). I believe all of the Passats are still made in Germany.
