Typically white smoke is water vapor. Often happens on cold mornings or when the dew point is high. Can be caused by water collecting in the exhaust system, i.e. the catalytic convert makes water vapor that condenses in a cool in the exhaust system. Short drives exacerbates the situation as the exhaust system doeb't heat up enough to drive away the moisture.
Blue smoke is typically oil being blown past a seal or collecting around the valves. Oil smoke will also have a characteristic oil smell. Cup your hand over the end of the exhaust pipe and then smell your hand. If the smaoke is caused by oil your hand should smell strongly of oil.
