Honestly, not on Saabs and Volvos. The "old" fashioned Saabs and Volvos, older than early 90s had bullet proof ignition coils but you could always tell when a customer had been to "another" shop because as a first repair they throw a new coil on the car when trying to solve a running or no start problem.
I guess those shops were used to domestic cars where I suspect bad coils are common.
The newer Volvos (960 93 and up) with individual coils on each spark plug have almost no problems whatsoever and IF? a coil fail you replace just that one and the other 4 or 5 keep going forever.
If the black IDM would have been as sturdy as the older red one I don't think we would have had many compaints at all.
