I completely agree. I've only lost one coil on any car I've had...and that was on a 1984 Mazda 626 with almost 200k miles. Lost my DI which was on it's way out on my '03 Aero at about 14,500 miles. CEL came on and went to the dealer which was right down the road from where I was driving, they said I just made it there in time.
It's a hit or miss item as far as I'm concerned...if it had such a huge failure rate, then it would be a recalled item. But it is something that obviously has some issues that Saab can't seem to iron out.
Yes batteries go, coils die, plug wires crack, plugs die....etc, but it's very rare that any of those items go out in such a short amount of time, and when they do, it's a much less expensive repair than a DIC, so it's obviously not as bothersome to most to have to replace them. My main concern with the DIC is the safety aspect of it...I'm glad mine didn't go out in the middle of city highway traffic.
