Nathan,
Funny, my wife drives my '88 8valve and thinks the car drives great, sounds great. She can't understand why I want a turbo. A few things to consider.
- CIS is a mechanical fuel injection, simple but not the most 'powerful' i.e. responsive. Cheap to fix, due to number of donors in junkyards and possible parts that could actually go bad.
- 8 valves run around 110hp, probably just enough. Trannies may last longer. Motors at this level are bullet-proof. Top (comfortable) highway speed is about 85MPH (IMHO!) for city work this is just fine.
- The auto (which I have) makes the 110hp feel less powerful, the 0-60 will not be impressive and maybe painful after driving a turbo.
- 19-21MPG with auto
- 4 doors can really come in handy
- >88 has the upgraded brakes, which I prefer
- add the turbo/s center console for more storage, simple upgrade
Other questions just ask!
Ed S
