I can't speak well on the technical engine issues, but....
The 8valve is noticeably less powerful. Has a heck of a lot of character though - it's kinda neat. Call me weird, but I enjoy my 8v more than my 16v because of it's engine. The NA version does struggle to keep up w/ modern car traffic at times, but I doubt the turbo would have any trouble at all!
Wiring: Yeah, there was bad wiring (not-so-heat-resistant) in '85 but not every car has it - it's the "few bad apples" thing (mine and many others are fine). The turbos, due to the red-hot cat. under the ingnition console cooking the wires, are supposedly more susceptible. Make sure it's got a solid cat heat shield. Turbo can cook wires in engine bay as well.
