I have the same thing on an 83. Haven't found the problem (been working on my '87 SPG instead), but here is what I know so far.
Pulled all of the fuses and still have a .04 Amp drain on the battery. I noticed that the alarm system (Who'd steal an 83 Saab?) was still energized with all the fuses pulled. So, it's not wired through a fuse and may be pulling current. I'm going to trace the source of power for the alarm and disconnect it.
Manual said, as you suspect, that the alternator is always connected to the electrical system. A defective diode would cause a current draw. My plan was to remove the connector to the alternator and see if this eliminates the current drain.
Hope this helps.
