It was a rotating B@Q#$! to get out.
Cut the wire at the sensor; your new sensor will either have a complete new harness and connector (expensive) or you'll be patching into the stock harness anyway the wire at the sensor just gets in the way.
First I removed the battery (could be worse, friend's Pantera, step #1 is 'Remove engine and transaxle as an assembly.") and when I couldn't get the sensor out, had to remove the turbo elbow and promptly snapped an exhaust stud. Had to drill/tap for a new oversize one. Just lucky the six or so studs that hold the elbow to the turbo didn't break.
After the elbow was out I put the elbow in a vise and used a BF six-sided flat-drive box wrench with a cheater bar to get the sensor out.
Looked like an OEM sensor at 160K miles...
So you might not want to remove the elbow. If you have air tools I think you can get a straight shot from the bottom and with a deep socket and impact extension(s) it should come right off.
Putting in the new one was trivial.
