One thing I've learned since I wrote that tale back in September is that it makes a HUGE difference if the exhaust pipe is warm. Was yours? If you've just driven the car, the cast aluminum pipe is expanded slightly more than the steel sensor threads. That's why, after struggling unsuccessfully trying to loosen a cold O2 sensor, many a Do-It-Yourselfer has given up, driven to the local Saab mech, and then watched in utter disbelief as the guy reached in with a wrench and twisted the offending device free with one pull. It SHOULD be a 10 minute job, as you describe, and not the nightmare I went through.
The thing is, I HATE working on hot exhaust parts. The turbo unit seems to be the heatsink for the entire car, and long after you can put your hand on the exhaust downpipe, the area around the O2 sensor is still mad hot. So I tackled my cold O2 sensor replacement job one beautiful morning after the Beastie had slept all night, with the results you read about.
