Count on putting in a new/rebuilt autotrans, probably around $2200 or so out the door at a good or Saab dealer. Saab cut the price on rebuilt trans a few years ago when I had mine done at S&S in Warrenton, VA. S&S has had a few naysayers on this board but Kenny has done ok by me.
$1750 might be a good price, but when you're done you'll have a $4000 car...plus you'll probably need another $1000-2000 worth of work on it.
And then the car will probably need a headliner, seat heater work, leather upholstery repair or replacement. Plus shocks, balljoint, probably a CV joint or inner driver replacement, the odd front wheel bearing, tires, brakes, (OTOH, the 88+ brakes are pretty good), harmonic balancer/oil pump reseal, (although you should do that when the trans is pulled, as well as replace the rear main, and you might even consider checking the bottom end, i.e., con and main rod bearings for corrosion/wear since they're exposed when the trans/engine is split).
Bottom line...you won't be getting a cheap saab. There ain't no such beast, and none of them would be turbos anyway!
Why not just fix your exhaust leak? I can't imagine the fix would cost more than this new turbo!
