Unless you want an automatic, I'd walk away. Even when they are running fine, the OG900 automatic had one big flaw- it's only a three-speed. Buzzy on the highway, and with only three forward gears, you take a big performance hit.
Given that the car has tranny problems, I would run (OK, maybe jog) away. There are very few simple and cheap transmission fixes. As the others have so well noted, you're going to end up dropping another $1000 at least getting the tranny up to snuff, and that is before all the other problems you'll find in a 13 year old car that you don't know about.
When I buy used, I always go for the nicest car I can find, the one where the last owner paid the dealer big bucks to get everything fixed, then got fed up and sells it. You can almost always get a nice car for just a few bucks more than a broken car. The only time I buy a car with problems is if I know EXACTLY what is wrong with it, and know exactly what it will take to fix it. Otherwise, I assume the worst (In your case, a new tranny). And I still have to figure in repairs for the stuff I missed on my inspection.
Keep looking. There are plenty of cars out there, no need to settle for this one.
