No special tools other than possibly a timing light, just a full day in the driveway/garage with hand tools and about $100 worth of parts and supplies. A "full tuneup" is also a safety inspection so I recommend:
Change all fluids, oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, power steering etc. Changing hydraulic fluid will require bleeding brakes and clutch but if the fluid is dark it should be done - it's an important safety item and will extend the life of hydraulic components. Check trans fluid level. Use distilled water when replacing the engine coolant not tap water. Replace plugs with NGK (check gap), new Bosch cap and rotor and Bougicords plug wires. Check ign. timing and advance. Check all hoses, check belts and tension, replace or adjust as necessary. Cleaning out the throttle body with gumout and a toothbrush can really smooth out the idle and general running - idle speed may need adjustment afterwards. Check condition of air filter and fuel filter and replace if necessary. Replace any vacuum lines that even look suspicous. Clean the battery terminals and check the battery cables condition and replace if necessary.
Don't skip the basics, check tire pressure and equalize all around, inspect tire wear and rotate if it's time. Check the spare tire, it's pressure and related equipment. Pull a wheel and check brake pad wear. Check the operation of the windshield wipers, replace blades if necessary, fill washer fluid. Check operation of all lights, clean the windows inside and out, and finally give your baby a thorough wash. I also use this time to check registration and insurance papers to make sure they are up to date.
