I removed the clutch inspection plate and looked inside with the motor running. Now, what exactly am I supposed to see? (reminder, the transmission isn't doing anything when ran through the gears) I checked the shifting rod going into the transmission and it is moving where it goes into the transmission. I can move the gear shifter into the gears without using the clutch. It was mentioned that it could be a complete clutch failure. (is this indicative?) When moving the gear shifter without using the clutch occasionaly I can get faint grinding, not really a destructive chewing sound but a noise typical if trying to put into gear without using a clutch. But whatever is making the noise soon slows to a stop.
Through the clutch inspection plate I see the larger outside portion of the clutch spining but don't know what this is telling me. On the shifting rod going into the transmission there is clamp where it could be possibly adjusted, would there be any possible damage incurred if i loosened that clamp and did some fiddling? Thanks in advance. 98,000 mi. on 86 900T.
