...so you can see if the upper drive sprocket is turning. If the clutch is engaged (clutch pedal released), the drive sprocket will turn even if trans is in neutral. If the clutch is trashed, drive sprocket may not turn, or will not turn at same speed as the engine.
Another test would be to turn engine off, put car in gear, and try to push it, or rock it. If car moves without turning the engine, something, somewhere, is broken, or it's not going into gear.
You can also try putting the front end up on jackstands so front tires are off the ground. Start car and put in gear. See if tires turn properly. Note tires may still turn if clutch is engaging even a little bit, but clutch may slip when it tries to move car. Just be careful when doing this!!
