hall effect sensor info...(long)

i am modifying a stock hall effect sensor to be used with an aftermarket ems. the wheel in the stock distributor has four windows separated by 90 degrees. the ems i am getting can be configured for leading edge or trailing edge operation, so stock pick up is not really an issue.
does the size of the window matter?
i need four "teeth" seperated by 90 degrees and an additional tooth 10 degrees off of the tooth for #1. my thought process is to use the space between the stock windows and cut out the teeth (each one is required to be 5 degrees in duration), then remove the rest of the material. this mod is easily done, but i do not know if the hall sensor will pick up or register a 5 degree tooth when it passes through. if the sensor needs to be completely blocked to notice the change i'll have to look elsewhere.
it appears as though the stock set up is used to pick up the open window. i figure i can reconfigure it to pick up the 'closed' window because the sensor should just register the change in condition, correct? meaning, as long as the sensor differentiates between window and no window, then picking up teeth instead of picking up the window should not make a big difference. am i making sense?
any ideas/thought? thanks.
