History...
Last couple years its been leaking slowly, AC shop tried fluorescent dye & didn't locate it for a while. Hose fittings (metal-to-hose) in that twin-hose thing on the compressor turned out to be leaking. With all this work, I thought it was a good excuse to convert to 134a, besides being "environmentally ethical". Well, I was told that I shouldn't think about this until my compressor died. When all the R-12 leaked out last spring, I just left it non-running.
Now it looks like I can do this without replacing the compressor, so maybe I will. One weekend when I have spare time ;-) I'm not worried about the work, I've done worse; I was worried that after a month I'd have a blown compressor.
