Hi, Jim, and thanks, it's good to be back.
I understand what you're saying, but my feeling is you should go ahead and do the conversion. If your compressor only lasts a month or a year, then you can replace it when it breaks, and you won't have spent a fortune on lost R-12 (or hurt the ozone layer). And in the meantime, you'll have A/C.
Right now, if my system broke a hose or sprung a leak, I wouldn't be out much money -- I could replace the hose and recharge it myself with little trouble. I wouldn't lose $200 worth of R-12.
When I was out on the road last week I passed through quite a few T-storms, and when hitting the suddenly super-humid conditions, it was great being able to defog and dehumidify the car. That's why even people who live up where it never gets warm should still have a functioning A/C system.
Good luck with yours, Jim. Let me know when it's done!
