First, thanks to everyone who responded. I expected to hear brake cleaner but it's always good to have my novice opinions validated.
Second, upon further investigation, there's some evidence that the bottom of the transmission housing experienced a significant collision with a rock during the same incident where the CV joint broke. Given the manner of driving and the condition of the roads, this seems very possible. There was some scoring on the housing and lots of dirt, clumps of grass on the bar that runs the width of the car, right in front of the transmission, if I recall correctly.
I also know I had bottomed out at least and probably more than once. Two bolts attaching the A-Arm to the body on the passengers side were bent substantially back (~45 degree angle).
Next time I play rally driver, it will be with a firmed up suspension and full frontal skidplate!!!
