A bad O2 should cause it to run poorly, but not quit suddenly. So for $300 they replaced the O2 sensor that should retail from the dealer for about $175. $300 is not enough to replace the fuel pump which would be my guess that would cause a sudden quit (from experience) or a fuel pump relay if it failed to start. So maybe the fuel pump relay failed, and thats about $60 from a dealer if I recall correctly, with minimum labor. Or the fuel pump stopped on a bad spot on the armature and the next movement of the car got it off the bad spot and allowed it to start.
So my guess is that they found something else that failed and was probably cheaper than the O2 sensor, but they saw the DIY repair and put the blame that. Or the real cause is intermittent and will show up again because it was not properly diagnosed. You didn't say if it quit while running or failed to start after running, but those would be my suspects.
Rt 22 would be JMK, a BMW/SAAB dealer; my observation of friend's maintenance costs at BMW dealers has always been one of "It Must Suck To Be You" because the dealers always replace a lot of part to "maintain performance".
Don't worry Jim, it wasn't your parts. I have been splicing in your O2 sensors every 30-40k miles for 178,000 miles now. With o problems. Your guy just had a typical dealer experience.
