Bought a '93 900T with gearshift/key problems. First look reveals the "shift controller" (the unit the gear shift lever bolts into, connects to car with three 3-sided nuts) has been disassembled, and bad things have happened there. The rear bracket which has the rear stud for bolting down the shift controller (rearmost 3-sided nut) is no longer welded to the car's floorpan! It looks as if someone tried (failed) to reattach it with JB Weld or Epoxy. Now I cannot really be certain of the original location.

I am prepared to remove seats and carpet, remove flammables, cover other stuff up, and get out the MIG Welder. I visited local salvage yard, got a nice feeling shift controller from a '91 with gear lever attached and good rubber/plastic bushings and keys. I have a Bentley Manual, and a tool for the 3-sided nuts (re-shaped 7/16" socket).

I have never changed one of the controllers before, So:

(1) Book says to remove it with Reverse selected, and key removed. Right now, I have no idea what gear the transmission is in, but i CAN get it into "Neutral". Book says to align it, put it in 3rd gear, and use "Shift Rod Alignment Tool" page 432-5, Figure 17. I don't have the tool. If the rear bracket was still attached to the car, it would act as a basic "locator" to start re-installation, and I would have marked the "Gear Rod" before disassembly, so I'd have a starting point to put things back together.

(2) Is there a semi-reasonable way to go about relocating the correct location for the rear bracket prior to welding it down? ("LM" has suggested returning to salvage yard, and taking locating measurements to locate spot - sounds good.)

(3) Any reason the basic idea won't work (welding in place, replacing shift controller)???? My impression is that the location of the rear mount is critical, so as to not bind the Gear Rod left/right.

(4) I've heard of a "spring" which goes from the shift controller to the floor(?), but didn't find a spring in the area of the car I bought, nor when I removed the good assembly from the salvage "donor". What size & shape is it, and where does it connect to things? P/N 75 42 913 in EPC??

(5) Or am I up against "guess and hope"? I have 3 other 900's at this time, and the latest is my 10th, all 5-speeds. I'm familiar with what shifting should feel like.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Guidance? HELP!!!!!
