reconstructing my shifter box and that is about all you can do. I too did not have the tranny in reverse so I ended up having to putting it in third, assemble the shifter, find reverse, then do the proceedure in the book. Not terribly hard, just a PITA. The "Special tool" can be a drill bit of the appropriate size to fit the hole. That spring is the external centering spring found on earlier model years. Good luck..\\
