runs hot a idle but cools at cruising speed

I just bought my first Saab and so far I love it.
I'm having a problem with it running very hot at idle.
It cools down once I get running but I don't want to damage the engine. so for now it's sitting. Not a fun place for my new baby.
I did notice that there was a leak at the heater core intake and I removed the hose to find part of the neck broken off. I removed the broken part and re-attached the hose and that fixed the leak.
I added plent of coolant to replace what was lost.
Ant ideas why this is happening?
