So a brand new battery didn't help. At this point, I think I'm trying to mitigate my worries (especially since 72saabsonnet mentioned the engine). Ray F brought up the starter and the cables as the next place to look.

The reason I thought it was the battery is because the car had slowly been having trouble starting until it died, then I put in a new battery and it fired right up and then the starting performance started degrading again. So I thought something was draining it, but the replacement battery's failure seems to negate that.

Will a starter degrade in performance over time like that? Or has my engine slowly been degrading and is now kaput? What else gets a little worse each day that a new battery temporarily fixed once, but not again?
