I've done it both ways, and one of the times was putting a new joint on the end of my "rebuilt" shaft after it failed early. I'd recommend getting just the outer joints and a set of inner boots with some new grease. I got my good ones from the Saabsite. And, I'd recommend getting new ball joints to replace the ones you're likely to break the boots on when you do the job, but you can always wait and do them later since they're not such a big job. If they haven't been replaced for a while though, you might as well replace them now.
