Just went through this kind of thing on my 93 900TC.
Despite lots of input that it was the U joint, it was perfect when I pulled it. My symptom was varying stiffness. Not really worse when cold.
Calif car so no rust/salt on the lower joint. You's sounds a bit more classic though .. and the shaft is expensive. You'll have to pull the knee bolster to get it out. It's an airbag car, don't do what I did and let the steering rotate when you will risk damage to the clock spring. The note on it says 2 1/2 turns back form where you feel it tighten with is correct. Be gentle!
Went ahead and changed the rack .. unpleasant job but not so bad once you figure out some of the tricks! The old rack was not leaking and has 90K miles on it from new.
That fixed it for me.
One thing to watch out for that I'm still looking at it on the Atlantic Enterprises rack from Eeuroparts ther was damage to on of the lines from the spool valve to the rack. I'm still trying to decide how bad it is but the wall must be VERY thin. It had just been painted over. I'd recommend a very close visual inspection of a rebuilt rack *before* you install it.
There is no way I'd have put this in if I'd seen the damage ahead of time!
